Our trail begins at the wetlands of Agia, home to more than 130 plant species and a shelter for many birds. The local dirt roads take us to the historical bridge of Keritis, where we cross the river of the same name and head towards the village of Alikianos.
We ride through the village’s neighborhoods using narrow streets running parallel to the river and then we go uphill, once again on dirt, to reach the imposing Valsamiotis dam. With a great view before us we go downhill towards Vatolakkos, through a green and lush trail leading to the village square, where we make a brief stop to rest and enjoy a traditional Cretan treat.
Once again hitting the dirt roads, we ride through a large valley with orange trees for the village of Koufos and its byzantine church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, in her guise as the Source of Life. Always on dirt, we once again cross the Keritis river, back to Agia and our starting point.

Our trail begins shortly after the village of Fournes. We’re immediately moving into a dirt road with thick undergrowth between large plane trees. Our trail begins at the village of Orthouni. Using the local dirt road network, we begin with an uphill ride, surrounded by lush vegetation and small streams, heading to the chapel of the Prophet Elijah. Right before the chapel, we take a moment to enjoy the great view unfolding below us, with the Cretan sea, the picturesque villages and the Chania region inland.
Following a brief ride on a paved road, we once again go uphill, this time around towards Omalo, using the dirt road from Fokies and our final destination being the sanctuary of Kallergis. This is a very alpine part, a beautiful untamed environment in the area known as Poria, with a number of historically important “koumoi”, distinctive small buildings, hidden in the region.
Once at the shelter, we make a brief stop to eat and to enjoy the view of the world-famous Samaria Gorge and the rocky formation Gigilos. From there, we go downhill on a difficult, demanding dirt road towards the Omalos plateau, in the direction of Lakkoi. The local dirt roads, again going through thick vegetation, are the final part of our trip as we end up back at our starting point.
